By Susan Hill. There are undertakers with shovels, of course, a local official who would rather be anywhere else, and one Mr Arthur Kipps, solicitor from London. He is to spend the night in Eel Marsh House, the place where the old recluse died amidst a sinking swamp, a blinding fog and a baleful mystery about which the townsfolk refuse to speak. But when the high tide pens him in, what he finds — or rather what finds him — is something else entirely. She evokes so cleverly the decrepit Eel Marsh House, the mention of its name enough to make the locals pause, their faces darken in unspoken wariness… The Woman in Black gives a thrilling sense of unease and provides just the right level of things that go bump in the night for a spine-tingling good read. Reviews Rated 5 out of 5 by Emma from Fantastic This is old school horror at it's best. It draws you in a has a way of making you feel like you have to turn the page or else!

It was truly scary and a delight to read. Date published: Rated 5 out of 5 by Sarah from Excellent Ghost Story This novel has perhaps one of the best, scariest passages found in a ghost story I loved how it was presented as a story within a story, it made Arthur feel more real, and made me feel more invested in his tale.

Unlike the movies, this novel is not based on jump scares, but more 'did I or did I not see that' events that leave you feeling unsettled, unnerved, and simultaneously hesitant and excited to find out what happens next. Rated 5 out of 5 by Marzipan from Great horror! I enjoyed the old movie, so I thought I'd give the book a try. It starts with an aside that probably could have been cut, but really picks up once all the characters are on the scene.

I absolutely loved this! Just like the movie, it has that plodding atmospheric buildup that I absolutely love. But then, when it gets terrifying, it gets pee-my-pants terrifying. Rated 4 out of 5 by Ocea from Very Enjoyable I tried buying this book but it was out of stock so I got he audiobook and it was great. The narrator was fantastic and the writing is beautiful. Love the story. Rated 4 out of 5 by Madison from Enjoyable Read I agree with the reviews that define this book as a modern Victorian Gothic.

I personally was not a huge fan of the style or writing as I did not find it as smooth to read as some books, but I suppose that comes with choice style of language used to create the feel of that era.
