For graduate school she switched to studying crabs and received a Ph. Her research interest is epithelial transport, and most recently work in her laboratory has focused on transport properties of the chick allantoic membrane.
At the University of Texas-Austin she teaches physiology in both lecture and laboratory settings, and instructs graduate students on developing teaching skills in the life sciences. The first edition of her textbook won the Robert W.
Hamilton Author Award for best textbook published in —98 by a University of Texas faculty member. Dee was the president of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society in —13, has served as editor-in-chief of Advances in Physiology Education, and is currently chair of the American Physiological Society Book Committee. She works with members of the International Union of Physiological Sciences to improve physiology education in developing countries, and this book has been translated into seven languages.
Her free time is spent creating multimedia fiber art and enjoying the Texas hill country with her husband, Andy, and their dogs. Hardcover Verified Purchase. I could have gotten a cheaper book but I rented this one because it said it came with the access card package. That was a blatant LIE. All my homework comes from the website. Paperback Verified Purchase. I ordered because it said it had an access code.
Did not come with an access code. My class has the 8th edition listed, but as we ALLL know, these text book companies make like 4 changes and charge an arm and a leg.
As a single mother back in school, I can't afford that and financial aid isn't an option because I already graduated with a BA. Anyways, the content in this international version is very easily understood and the layout is visually stimulating. The seller was efficient and fast in sending me the book. It came in plastic wrap with NO damage. I am so happy to have this book. Just received my item and it is bent in on multiple corners. One of the seams is ripped.
The cover is dirty, dusty, and bent. The book seems used. Some of the pages have ink blotched on them. This is ridiculous. I paid for a new book! As a college student I chose to spend extra money to get this book brand new. I should get a new book. Not something that looks like it was run over and kicked around in its box.
The box was also damaged as well that it came in. I purchased this book here on amazon in order to complete my physiology class. However, upon receiving my book, I discovered that there was no access card inside. Aside from this, the book was great This textbook covers a lot of the basics and is easy to follow and read; the diagrams are simple and clearly laid out. Each section within a chapter ends with a concept check to help the reader understand the main ideas covered.
The best part of this text book is NOT having to purchase another book that provides all the answers, because they are already included in this book! I think this is a great way to help apply the material learned in that section to a real life illness. This is better than the medical physiology book I currently have, which is overwhelming and more difficult to read.

If only Dr. Silverthorn would also write one for graduate students, physiology would probably be more fun to learn! Taking pathophysiology in pharmacy school, this was a wonderful book.
It was so detailed, and supplemented the lectures with material. For me, reading helps me understand the material and put the big picture together. It explains in more detail certain aspects the professors went over in class that help me learn. The pictures are in color. The book I got was a paperback, but I did not mind that. Really, this is a great human physiology book that I would recommend any student to consider as a supplemental book or for a professor to consider as a required reading book.

Easy-to-Follow Instructions help students integrate informationby creating concept maps and flow charts. Figure 1. A Ready-to-Go Teaching Module provides extensive teaching suggestions for instructors to guide students in creating concept maps.
Mapping Exercises are included in the end-of-chapter Review Questions for most chapters.
Unique Integrative Physiology chapters Chapters 13, 20, and 25 ask students to step back and look at the big picture to learn how separate physiological processes work together in an integrated system. These chapters explore control of body movement, fluid and electrolyte balance, and exercise and demonstrate the emergent properties of the various body systems. The four themes explore structure-function relationships, biological energy use, information flow within an organism, and homeostasis and control systems that maintain homeostasis.
A Ready-to-Go Teaching Module includes a wealth of teaching ideas to help students build and practice graphing skills. Running Problems explore a real-world disease or disorder that unfolds in short segments throughout the chapter.
Students can check their understanding by comparing their answers with those in Problem Conclusion at the end of each chapter. Questions throughout the chapter give students an opportunity to check their understanding. Figure Questions and Graph Questions ask students to think critically and analytically, providing frequent stop-and-think opportunities to reinforce important concepts while building visualization and graphing skills. Answers to these questions appear at the end of the text, in Appendix A.
Concept Checks appear at intervals throughout the chapter and test students before they move on. The variety of questions also gives instructors flexibility in assigning homework from the text: Level 1 questions review basic facts and terms. Level 2 questions test the student's ability to comprehend and integrate the key concepts in the chapter.
Level 3 exercises are real-world scenarios designed to develop problem-solving skills. Level 4 questions are quantitative questions that require mathematical skills. Cover the right balance of fundamental physiology concepts along with exciting research developments NEW! Carefully selected content updates have been added throughout the text to reflect the dynamic state of physiology research, including: Easy-to-follow references direct learners to related content and media NEW!
Learning Outcomes appear at the beginning of every chapter to provide a learning framework for students, allowing them to easily test their knowledge after reading. Background Basics and Concept Links help students locate, revisit, and review topics they encounter.

Carefully developed Art program helps students learn physiology more efficiently. Essentials Figures distill the basics of a topic into one or two pages, helping students to see the big picture of human physiology.
Anatomy Summary Figures provide succinct visual overviews of a physiological system from a macro to micro perspective. Whether students are learning the anatomy for the first time or refreshing their memory, these summaries show the essential features of each system in a single figure. Reflex pathway maps and concept maps demonstrate at-a-glance complex physiological processes.
Review Figures visually present foundational concepts that students may already be familiar with. Students may find it helpful to check out these figures before learning new physiology concepts.
