The newscast showed rioting in the streets of Kabul, then a jump to another reporter atop a hotel roof looking down at a Baghdad filled with fires. The violence now threatens to spread to neighboring states. Raine picked up the near-empty shot glass next to his beer and drained it. Funny, to sit here in this Red Hook dive appropriately named The Hook, just as his old man used to do when he retired to his old neighborhood in Brooklyn. Not just to enter military service. Both would go into the Corps. No question about it.

Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham. Now into its second season of 12 novellas, Cherringham is popular around the world and has been adapted as a series of audiobooks in English and German.

When Lieutenant Nick Raine emerges from his Ark, he finds a future indistinguishable from nightmare.

Humankind has not been entirely destroyed on the surface world, and a primitive new society has emerged in which life is nasty, brutish, and short.

Mutants and bandits prey upon the weak, and a mysterious military group known as the Authority preys upon everyone. Worst of all, a would-be tyrant seeks to impose his will upon the shattered planet. Armed with nothing more than his combat training and survival instincts, Raine must rise to meet the challenges of the wasteland. Read more Read less. I would recommend anyone that decides to take a leap of faith on books from the video game genre this one would be it--it reads more like a book that a video game was inspired from and not the other way around.

I know it sounds counter intuitive but I would recommend watching the "Uprising Trailer" at [ The action is fast paced and the author does a wonderful job of making me want to know what's next--he accomplishes this by sending the main character from one setting to the next, one mystery and action sequence leading to another setting and set of characters to discover.

Always a sign of an entertaining and good book for me is when I can't put it down, and this has had me totally hooked after the protagonist wakes up from his Cryogenic sleep of years--from there it's buckle up and enjoy the ride. Only decision I have left is Decisions, decisions--probably will finish it--since i've never been a person with too much patience: Definitely recommended reading, this is definitely the "popcorn movie" in book form--it's no Dostoevsky novel but not cheesy either.

Aside from the prologue setting up how the main character gets put in one of the arks, the book follows the game pretty much note for note for the first half or so. I got the feeling that this is because they gave the writer an early draft of the script, because as the book goes on it deviates more and more from what happens in the game, even going so far as to contradict stuff in the game such as killing off characters who are clearly alive and well in game.

One thing I liked is that the story is much more fleshed out and paints the world as really harsh and dog eat dog, where as in the game people are actually pretty friendly and laid back. Excusing the groan inducing name drop at the very end I enjoyed it as a kind of "alternate world" to the games and honestly it does have a much better story and ending. In this book the character J. Stiles, host, showman, and mastermind of BashTV, says something to the affect of in order to have real drama, the good guys have to get hurt some of the time too.

That's the approach the book takes as well. While id software's game RAGE may be at its core a first person shooter where you can restore your last saved game to continue blowing away the bad guys, the book helps to develop the broader intent of id software of accessing the conventions of plot and character for a deeper experience.

The game developers did a great job of providing a very robust story platform, complete with a very well developed story line, a good range of character types, and some great science fiction technology.

The author makes good use of all of that from the game and weaves a fun, fast paced hero-adventure. The book follows the main plot points of the game while veering from the game story line enough to make things more interesting.

Most importantly, the book provides much deeper detail about the characters in the game. For instance, you get to peak at the pre-disaster life of our hero a bit and learn a little something about his family life, career, etc.

Also, while in the game, Dan Hagar's daughter Loosum is nothing more than a girl leaning on a rail offering wingstick lessons, in the book she actually has a personality and is integral to the plot. Of course, high literature this is not, but it does accomplish exactly what it's meant to accomplish, i. Anybody who has played the game, and enjoyed it, will quickly find themselves loving the book as well. Nobody can be trusted in this world, Bandit clans are everywhere, death and destruction is an everyday occurence, and on top of all of that a secretive, militaristic government has risen to power, The Authority The plot is strong, it tells the story of how a former USMC Liuetenant named Raine must survive in this harsh world, and try to evade The Authority.

There will be moments where the book is extremely dramatic, it builds up to events well. I could barely find a dull moment in this book, there was alway's action, or a build up to action. If you need something to read for a plane, train, caride etc, this is an excellent book to read as well because the book goes by fast, and is easy to read, about pages mostly because it is written in a way that you cannot get enough of the book, it is that good.

For fans of the game it will give you more perspective as well, like the orgins of the main character Raine, and how the Authority came to be. You will also notice how events in the game are depicted in the story in a much more personal way, and events will not happen the way that you remember them in the game either. All in all a great read, action packed, as well as extremely immersive.
