In a postapocalyptic world, four men and one woman are all that remain of the human race, brought to near extinction by an artificial intelligence. Programmed to wage war on behalf of its creators, the AI became self-aware and turned against all humanity. The five survivors are prisoners, kept alive and subjected to brutal torture by the hateful and sadistic machine in an endless cycle of violence. Presented here with six more groundbreaking and inventive tales that probe the depths of mortal experience, this collection proves why Ellison has earned the many accolades he's received and remains one of the most original voices in American literature. This collection of short fiction by Harlan Ellison consists of only seven stories. The AI finds a way to indefinitely extend the lives of the five so that it can keep its playthings around. The AI is kind of like a sadistic child with an ant farm. The story is told from the perspective of one of the five remaining humans.

A folksy narrator tells the tale of how a fellow interstellar circus performer met his ends. Ellison does an excellent job of creating a unique character and tone in this story. On a planet of beautiful people, there remains a family of uggos--and the child is the ugliest of all. The three-person crew of a spaceship crashes on an unfamiliar planet. The planet is inhabited by ant-like creatures that can form complex shapes, and through such displays the creatures can reflect the essence of who a person is back at them.

This proves more than the despicable captain of the small crew can bear. In the Introduction, we are told by Theodore Sturgeon that the description in this story is very much how people on hallucinogens experience the world. I can see what Sturgeon is saying. The story begins with a series of vignettes about people who died for no logical reason and at the least likely times.

A man in Las Vegas hits the jackpot on a slot machine. He feels compelled to engage in the very sucker-like behavior of playing the same machine again, but he wins again and then keeps winning. All their investigation reveals is that a woman had died playing that machine some time before. The best of the stories are outstanding, and the worst of them are still intriguing and readable. Rape is a theme that repeats in a couple of stories.

Many things grow over time, and in the process earlier iterations seem This collection of short stories suffers from this in spades.

The technology is awkward, almost laughable in how clunky the predicted future is. Worse, the s superior male and hyper sexual, idiotic female is painful to read. The stories are prefaced by smug, self-satisfied 'explanations' that add nothing to the experience.

Give this a pass unless you are interested in having a reference point for how far sci-fi has come. Dave Carver Top Contributor: I first found Harlan Ellison in my teens. I don't know that I understood all he wrote but I liked it!

I've moved many times but his books have always made the trip. Entire book shelf has nothing but Ellison. Now that my hands don't work as well I am gradually filling up my Kindle with his stories. Embeds 0 No embeds. No notes for slide. Stories [PDF] 1. Stories [PDF] 2.

Harlan Ellison: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

Like many people, I've had an ongoing hot and cold relationship with Ellison's works ever since I was introduced to them in middle school. He is a solid example of a strong personality that has inextricably embedded itself into an author's work--not always a good thing, considering the personality in question.

While I've always found Ellison's arrogance and damn-the-critics bravado annoying, I found them occasionally unbearable while listening to this collection.

Ellison's gritty, dystopian fiction really speaks for itself. Or should, anyway. I did like the audio effects, however -- a nice touch.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream: Stories [PDF]

He pops around between his "manic," "ethnic," and "heartbroken" settings at will, with an irritating preference for the former. The introductory audioessay is a nice bonus, too -- it provides an appropriate orientation both to the works and to their author. I really don't understand his deep love for "Grail," but maybe you'll disagree. Which is understandable, but distracting. Be sure that you've read the stories before you hear them, or you run the risk of thinking less of some of the best short form science fiction in the English language.

Great stories. Some authors can interpret and perform their own work, take John Le Carre for instance, his pacing and phrasing let the story emerge on its own merits. Harlan Ellison writes challenging material and then allows no room for interpretation with his uncompromising oral style.

Maybe the raw, breathy technique adds something for some people so I won't mark it down to 1 star. For me I like it best when the recording company puts in the effort to find the right voice for the story and with very few exceptions that job falls to professional performance artists.
